In beginning of this exercise I started playing with different forms, like curves and reflective materials. The concept was that of floating, glowing light sources reflecting off of the surfaces. The reflection behind the objects invokes a completely different scene. I used several different colors of lights from different locations, usually around the floating globes. The lights are mostly cone lights and distant lights.

I'm glad that you are working with FormZ for assignment 2. You have gotten some good ideas with catching the shadows on the curved screen. How about if you try turning the view more completely towards the set, so that the white sky doesn't show? It would focus our attention more fully on the world that you are creating.
To supplement what you can build, you could try downloading objects or people to insert into your scene.
